Wersja polska – pod tym adresem
To unite film lovers, regardless of political boundaries, is the main idea of this Festival. The organisers have managed to spread their news far afield, so viewers will be able to see films from different countries and cultures, some quite far away. Together with the Short Film Festival ODDALENIA Gala which is scheduled for Saturday 18 June there will be a variety of accompanying events.
And this is the 8th Short Film Festival ODDALENIA 2016. This time it will be a very special event in every respect. We received 38 submissions. The films are coming from Lebanon, India, Pakistan, Brazil, Greece and Germany, among others. We have productions from Poland and Ireland as well. It was a very difficult task for the selection committee, because the standard of the films was very high and the subject matter quite varied. As organisers we have decided to enlarge our festival format, so we will have more accompanying events this year.
The first screening will take place on Friday 17 June at 20:00 hours in a place well known to the Polish Community, the library called Biblary. Aneta Kubas will start a series of creative meetings under the apt title of “Kino Kava”. During this movie night the public will be able to see a Polish film “Jak być kochaną” (1962), directed by Wojciech Has. Together with Aneta’s talk there will be food and drink sixties style with jazz accompaniment. You are invited to get your old sixties clothes out of the wardrobe and join in the fun.
On Saturday 18 June at 19:00 starts the Gala of the Short Film Festival ODDALENIA 2016. The public will see 12 films which in our opinion are the most valuable and interesting. The films will be judged by a Jury composed of professionals in the field of film, graphics and photography under the chairmanship of Edyta Dolan. There will be an honorary member of the Jury : Mrs Katarzyna Kasperkiewicz, Vice – Consul at the Polish Embassy. The Polish Embassy in Dublin funded the main prize, worth €1,000. Moreover, for the past few years the Polish Embassy is supporting our festival in many ways. For instance, the screen and projector that we have at our disposal are generous gifts from the Polish Embassy.
The winner, apart from the prize, will receive the Grand Prix SFF ODDALENIA 2016 Statuette, designed and created by Pawel Jasinski. This young talented artist is already well known in international circles. His earlier exhibition „Definition of beauty” was a big success.
The public will be able to choose their own “best film” as well. As a matter of fact, over the years, public and professional opinion converged on many occasions. And what will this year bring? I must admit that I am very curious myself. During a short interval we will be able to enjoy some tasty snacks prepared by ChillOut Break Café and Wieslaw Borowski. There will be prizes for the public as well.
Aneta Keder, actress, model and presenter, will be compering the Festival Gala, which she has done for the past few years with great success. Aneta is an administrator of the Festival profile on FB.
The Night Film Session on Friday 24 June at 21:00 in the Polish House will be the next attraction of the Festival. We have prepared 8 films, which we think, are definitely “must sees”.
The show will be preceded by a lecture about Polish orthography given by an academic from University of Silesia, professor Danuta Krzyzyk. The lecture will be in Polish and will start at 19:00.
On the same day there will be a Concert on the occasion of St. John’s Eve (Sobótka). Where? On the Grand Canal Bridge at Leeson Street, next to the Polish House. The Concert of Sobótka songs was prepared by Joanna Dominika Belzyt from the Tan Theo Foundation. The organisers of the Night Movies ask the public to wear white and decorate their heads with floral wreaths. According to the old Polish tradition they will be dropped into water. Persons interested in signing traditional songs may take part in song workshops, organised on 23 – 25 June in the Polish House and in the Iveagh Gardens at Clonmel Street, Dublin 2.
The photography exhibition, entitled „Poland in Irish eyes and Ireland in Polish eyes”, prepared by the Irish Polish Society, will accompany our Festival. During the entire Festival it will be possible to buy “ODDALENIA Mugs”, made especially for the occasion by the Mug Post Services. Profits from the sale of the mugs and Gala entry tickets will go to the restoration fund for the basement of the Polish House.
